David Macaulay

David was born in Bolton-le-Sands, Lancashire, and came to live in Ulverston in 1970. From 1956-1961 he studied at the Lancaster & Morecambe and Liverpool Colleges of Art. After beginning his career as an Art teacher in Essex, David returned to the North in 1963 when he joined the staff of Ulverston Victoria County Secondary School in Hart Street.

This became the Victoria Comprehensive High School, Lower School, in 1971.

From 1973 David continued his Art teaching at John Ruskin School, Coniston, until taking early retirement from full-time teaching in 1990. He then taught part-time at Chetwynde School in Barrow-in-Furness until 2002. David has now retired from teaching completely and devotes as much time as possible to his own paintings, drawing and woodcarving.

David’s main mediums are graphite, pastel and crayon for intimate studies done directly from the landscape or in the studio and he enjoys the use of oil paint for larger, detailed studio works. Closely observed, sensitive graphite studies of trees contrast vividly with dynamic interpretations of the texture, movement and colour in fragments of both natural and man-made environments. As a Member of the Lake Artists’ Society David has exhibited regularly at Grasmere for many years. His work is represented in private collections abroad as well as in Britain.
