Alan Stones

We make paintings and drawings for all sorts of reasons but primarily because they can be an exciting challenge.

Since leaving art school (St. Martins, London in 1971) Alan has worked full-time as a self-employed artist – more than fifty years at it!

Perhaps not surprisingly, given the relentless nature of self-employment, a concern of Alan’s and consequently an occasional theme in his work, is ‘human endeavour’.

In his minimal lithographs people are often climbing steep hillsides and in his oil paintings too, walking is a recurring theme.

Alan’s paintings are created slowly, often over several months. They evolve. His emphasis on one figure or another might alter or the context for the figures might change. The painting becomes an arena for a continuous process of discovery. Alan loves analysing them... and making them is fun!
