P. L. Hobbs. Sketching Close To Home

Slide I see this little patch of woodland every morning, throughout all the seasons. It never fails to give me pleasure. In summer it is the dappled patchwork of light and shade on the foliage and the trunks of the old oak trees that creates an ever-changing series of patterns across the whole scene. Slide Apart from a bag in the summer or deep pockets in the winter, this is all the equipment I need for a days sketching. Slide I usually start with a light pencil ‘rough’ mostly just to divide up the paper. Slide Sometimes I need to extend it onto the previous page. Slide Laying in the first washes allows me to evaluate the broad simple shapes. Slide The second stage sees a little bit of ‘depth’ emerging. Slide I can also begin to think about colour and texture. Slide It just remains to chase down some of those elusive patterns. Slide Finished. Finished
